H2C and Lloyd’s Register accelerate green shipping

H2C, the global platform for low-carbon fuel attributes, has partnered with Lloyd’s Register (LR) to accelerate the adoption of clean maritime fuels such as biofuels, e-fuels, and green hydrogen derivatives. The collaboration aims to give stakeholders greater confidence in emissions claims, unlocking investment across complex maritime value chains.

Under the partnership, LR will verify that Green Premium Certificates (GPCs) represent valid, exclusive, and accurately priced emissions claims. This assurance helps buyers demonstrate compliance with schemes like FuelEU Maritime, IMO lifecycle assessment guidelines, and the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD). H2C’s registry separates environmental attributes from the fuel itself, allowing shipowners, cargo operators, and brands to fund green fuel production through certificate purchases.

Peter Ellen, H2C CEO, said the collaboration “creates the economic conditions for transition,” enabling producers to secure financing, shipping companies to manage compliance costs, and green shipping services to generate value-added revenue. Nick Gross of LR added that verifying certificate provenance helps the shipping sector fund and track decarbonization efforts without relying on offsets or unverified claims.

Together, H2C and LR aim to scale a globally interoperable certificate market, supporting early-stage investment, regulatory compliance, and the shift toward low-carbon shipping.
