Greek shipowners embrace nuclear for maritime future

Greek shipowners are set to play a key role in advancing nuclear energy for the maritime sector. The commitment was clear at ARGO: New Nuclear for Greek Maritime, held in Athens, where over 120 industry leaders gathered to discuss the technology’s potential.

“Nuclear energy is stepping forward as a credible long-term solution,” said Christopher Wiernicki, Chairman and CEO of the American Bureau of Shipping.

Charlotte Vere, Group Head of Market Development at CORE POWER, emphasized Greece’s influence on shipping’s future. “For generations, Greek shipowners have led the industry at pivotal moments. Now we are at another inflection point as the sector faces carbon and emission levies,” she said.

Industry experts highlighted nuclear’s reliability and potential to transform shipping efficiency. CORE POWER is working with ABS Hellas and ATHLOS Energy on a project to explore deploying floating nuclear power plants (FNPPs) in the Mediterranean. The initiative will examine how FNPPs could supply clean electricity to islands, enable zero-emission ports, and power desalination plants.

“Nuclear is no longer speculative,” said Thomas Davies of CORE POWER. “It is emerging as a commercially rational, operationally superior pathway for shipowners navigating an uncertain energy future.”
