Godby Shipping has placed an order for two new Stream RoRo 1700 vessels at CIMC Raffles in China, with options for an additional two ships. The order was confirmed on 11 February 2026.
The investment forms part of the company’s strategy to renew its fleet, enhance tailor-made transport solutions for customers and meet current and future environmental requirements.
Vessel specifications and capacity
The newbuildings will measure 125 metres in length with a beam of 24 metres and offer a trailer capacity of 1,700 lane metres. Total cargo capacity will be approximately 6,200 metric tons.
Each vessel will be equipped with a stern ramp and fixed ramps connecting three cargo decks. Typical cargo will include trailers, cassettes, cars, other RoRo cargoes and forest products. The ships will also be capable of carrying containers, reefer units and certain classes of dangerous goods.
Efficiency and environmental focus
The Stream RoRo concept has been developed in cooperation with Technolog Services in Hamburg and builds on operational experience from Godby Shipping’s existing fleet.
The company said special emphasis will be placed on minimizing fuel consumption through extensive CFD modelling and tank testing. Despite offering 70–100% greater cargo capacity than the company’s current vessels Mimer and Midas, the new ships are expected to maintain similar fuel consumption levels.
The vessels will feature shore power connections and battery systems enabling emission-free port stays and short sea passages. Battery capacity can be expanded in the future and complemented by additional emission-free power generation. The ships are also prepared for waste heat recovery systems and alternative fuels, including methanol.
Construction timeline and employment
Construction is scheduled to begin in June and November 2027. Launching is planned for May and October 2028, with deliveries expected in September 2028 and January 2029.
The new vessels are expected to create approximately 50 onboard jobs. Godby Shipping aims to register the ships under the Finnish flag. Like the company’s existing RoRo vessels, they will be built to Finnish/Swedish ice class 1A standards.
