Fincantieri launched its first integrated underwater drone system, “DEEP,” during a demonstration at the Naval Support and Experimentation Center in La Spezia. The launch marks a key milestone in the company’s expansion into advanced underwater technologies, reinforcing its leadership in this strategic sector.
Cutting-Edge System for Security and Sustainability
DEEP is designed as a dual-use system serving both civilian and defense needs. It supports the protection and maintenance of underwater infrastructure and ports, along with environmental monitoring and protection. The system can adapt to multiple missions, providing high-value solutions for both industrial and national security applications.
The platform integrates:
-
A network of underwater sensors for early warning,
-
A Command and Control Center for real-time operations,
-
Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs) that perform missions at various autonomy levels,
-
An AI-based data analysis system to process and interpret collected information.
Strengthening Italy’s Underwater Capabilities
The launch aligns with Fincantieri’s strategy to build a unified Underwater Technology Hub that consolidates expertise across civil, military, and dual-use domains. This hub leverages Italy’s industrial supply chain to deliver integrated, high-value maritime technology.
Globally, the underwater sector is valued at around €50 billion annually, with about €22 billion in opportunities accessible to Fincantieri. The company aims to become a leading force in this emerging field, supporting national security, energy resilience, and environmental sustainability.
Leadership Perspective
Fincantieri CEO Pierroberto Folgiero said: “The launch of DEEP proves our commitment to pushing the boundaries of innovation ever deeper. This system offers a real solution for protecting critical infrastructure with the best available technology. It represents a step toward technological autonomy, competitiveness, and leadership in the global underwater economy.”
The event was attended by senior Italian government and naval officials, underscoring the strategic importance of underwater technology in Italy’s defense and industrial future.
