The world’s largest shipping association, BIMCO, has elected its first president from the Americas.
Paul Pathy, president and chief executive of Canada’s largest dry bulk shipping company, Fednav, is taking over from Nikolaus Schües, CEO of German owner F. Laeisz, who is finishing his two-year term.
“I am honoured to take on the role of president at BIMCO. Our industry faces significant challenges, and I am committed to raising awareness about the invaluable contributions of the shipping industry and seafarers,” said BIMCO’s 47th president.
“We are at a critical juncture where free trade is under threat and geopolitical tensions are escalating. It is crucial that we support our industry, ensure the safety of our seafarers and facilitate a global marketplace,” he added.
Fednav’s CEO since 2017, takes the helm after two years as president designate. Schües will remain on the board for an additional two-year term. Ioanna Procopiou of Greece’s Prominence Maritim was elected as the new president designate.
