Eyesea and EVI Safety Technologies have unveiled a new artificial intelligence system designed to detect and report containers lost overboard in real time. The technology uses standard onboard cameras and is now ready for trials on operational vessels following successful simulation testing.

The system applies advanced computer vision and machine learning to existing deck and bridge cameras. It automatically identifies and counts containers falling from ships or drifting at sea. Once detected, the system immediately transmits incident data to vessel owners, Flag States, and, when required, coastal authorities.

The solution supports upcoming IMO mandatory reporting requirements for lost containers. These rules call for rapid reporting of a container’s position, quantity, and cargo details, particularly for dangerous goods. The Eyesea–EVI system generates geo-tagged images and structured incident data at the moment of detection, helping crews meet regulatory obligations with greater accuracy and consistency.

Eyesea Founder Graeme Somerville-Ryan said container loss was one of the first use cases built into the platform, calling the move from simulation to real-world deployment a major step for detection and environmental protection.

EVI Safety Technologies CEO Vladimir Ponomarfev said the collaboration demonstrates how AI and machine learning can address long-standing safety and environmental challenges in the maritime sector.

Beyond compliance, the system tackles a critical operational gap. Container losses often go unnoticed or are reported too late to warn nearby vessels. Real-time detection improves situational awareness, enhances navigational safety, and provides reliable data for drift modelling, investigations, and potential recovery efforts.

Onboard trials are set to begin next, with wider deployment planned once real-world performance is validated.
