Everllence has confirmed the successful operation of its 21/31 dual-fuel engine running fully on ethanol at its test facility in Frederikshavn, Denmark. The engine performed successfully at all load points, proving the platform’s fuel flexibility.

Everllence has led alternative-fuel engine development for more than a decade. It introduced the first commercial two-stroke methanol-burning engine in 2016. In 2024, it launched the world’s first small-bore four-stroke methanol GenSet, the 21/31DF-M, with several units now in commercial operation.

By extending the same platform to ethanol, Everllence can now document ethanol’s performance as a marine fuel. Tests showed the engine could run on a higher share of ethanol than methanol.

“This platform has shown strong potential with alternative fuels,” said Rasmus Frimann Nielsen, Senior Manager and Head of Four-Stroke Small-Bore Engineering at Everllence. “We increased the ethanol fuel share during testing. Market interest in ethanol is growing, and our design work allowed us to move quickly. The results confirm that the engine can run on ethanol without issues.”

Lars Zimmermann, Director of Sales & Promotion for Marine GenSets at Everllence, said customers remain uncertain about which fuel strategy to adopt. “Fuel flexibility is essential. Ethanol is the latest step in our multi-fuel approach. As a global engine designer, we must help drive maritime decarbonisation. Regulation now needs to support ethanol as a viable marine fuel and encourage market uptake.”
