Everllence has completed the world’s first conversion of an Everllence B&W S90 two-stroke engine to run on dual-fuel methanol, marking a major decarbonisation milestone. The 11S90ME-C engine aboard COSCO SHIPPING LINES’ 20,000+ TEU vessel COSCO SHIPPING LIBRA was successfully retrofitted to an 11S90ME-LGIM (Liquid Gas Injection Methanol) unit following sea trials.
Everllence PrimeServ, the company’s after-sales division, worked with COSCO SHIPPING HEAVY INDUSTRY on the full project, from design and engineering to installation, commissioning, and trials. To support the effort, Everllence built a dedicated 4S90 testbed engine in Japan, commissioned in early 2025, to validate methanol performance under real operating conditions.

Everllence has already completed 26 dual-fuel conversions across various fuels and plans more large-scale retrofits. The success of the COSCO SHIPPING LIBRA project opens opportunities for over 300 S90-class vessels worldwide that could adopt similar upgrades.
Petersen added:
“This retrofit demonstrates that methanol is a practical, proven marine fuel. Collaboration across the industry will be key to accelerating the energy transition.”
