EST-Floattech will supply its Octopus Lite battery system for six new general cargo vessels built by Ferus Smit Shipyard in the Netherlands for Arklow Shipping. The company worked closely with Ferus Smit and Eekels Technology, which provides the vessels’ electrical systems, to design a system that matches the ships’ sailing profiles. This collaboration boosts efficiency and technology performance for Arklow Shipping.

The 11,000 DWT vessels mark another milestone in the partnership between Ferus Smit and Arklow Shipping.

The battery systems will support grid stabilization during sailing and power key operations such as loading, unloading, and running the vessel’s electric excavator. They will also supply energy for the bow thruster and enable zero-emission port stays. These systems improve efficiency and cut CO₂ and other emissions throughout the ships’ operations.

Patrick Kuiper, Mechanical Designer at Ferus Smit Shipyard, said:
“We chose EST-Floattech because of their proven performance and service on earlier projects. Their modular battery design allows capacity upgrades during the vessel’s lifetime, giving Arklow flexibility and keeping the ships future-proof.”

The first vessel will be delivered in 2026, with the final one expected by 2029.

Walter van der Pennen, Chief Commercial Officer at EST-Floattech, added:
“We appreciate the trust from Ferus Smit, Eekels, and Arklow Shipping. Many cargo vessel owners now want to operate more efficiently with fewer emissions. Our battery systems, paired with modern electric propulsion, help reduce fuel use and emissions while preparing for a cleaner, more sustainable future.”
