A dedicated electric charging station has been installed to power a fleet of emission-free construction machinery during the building of the Princess Alexia Viaduct on Maasvlakte 2.

The viaduct project includes the construction of a fully electrified construction site, complete with fast chargers, a Stedin-connected transformer station, and a wide range of battery-powered equipment, including electric trucks, asphalt machines, rollers, screeders, excavators, telehandlers, loaders, and a mobile crane, alongside charging points for electric vehicles used by personnel.

The charging infrastructure was designed and implemented well in advance through early collaboration between BAM and grid operator Stedin, ensuring the connection could go live without delay.

The charging station supports BAM’s winning tender strategy, which prioritized low-emission materials such as sustainable concrete and asphalt and fully electric machinery, aligning with the project’s environmental performance goals.

The Princess Alexia Viaduct will serve as a crucial overpass on the Maasvlakteweg, bridging key infrastructure corridors including the industrial pipeline zone, utility pipelines, the Container Exchange Route, and the rail line.

It will also connect with the Mekongweg and Máximaweg via single-level crossings and will ultimately replace the existing at-grade junction.

The Port of Rotterdam Authority is simultaneously doubling the number of road lanes on the Maasvlakteweg and building a dedicated cycle path.

Though the area initially handled light traffic following the opening of Maasvlakte 2, growth in container throughput and new terminal construction is expected to significantly increase transport flows in the coming years.
