Efficiency boost at APM Terminals Gothenburg amidst expansion project

APM Terminals Gothenburg has effectively managed the challenge of staying agile during a significant port expansion, helping 96% of the 70% of vessels arriving out of their appointed timeslots to depart on time.

This efficiency is further enhanced by the Swedish terminal’s innovative approach to optimizing terminal handling equipment routing, which has reduced driving distances by 30% for exports and 15% overall.

In a significant shift, APM Terminals Gothenburg reintroduced bi-directional, two-way traffic for Rubber Tyred Gantry cranes in September, moving away from the conventional one-way system, and bolstering service quality.

Enhanced Operational Strategy Supervisor Rickard Lindén explained the strategic move saying they previously utilized bi-directional streets by the quay, and aimed to reintroduce and improve this system while maximizing yard space and safety.

Despite 60% of the southern quay being inactive due to the Skandia Gateway project—a collaboration between the Swedish Maritime Administration and the Port of Gothenburg to deepen and widen the port—the terminal has adeptly navigated these constraints.

The project aims to deepen the port’s berth from 13.5 meters to 17.5 meters and widen the turning circle outside the box terminal.

Jasmin Mujdzic, Head of Operations at APM Terminals Gothenburg, emphasized the importance of proactive and flexible planning alongside shipping lines, dynamic staffing to meet operational demands, and timely equipment maintenance adjustments.

Also, a notable achievement is the implementation of bi-directional maneuvering, which has reduced driving distances, fuel consumption, customer wait times, and enhanced safety.

The adoption of bi-directional traffic on the quay has been complemented by new local standards that allow for 95% of hatch covers to be positioned directly on the vessels, improving cargo protection and operational efficiency.
