Container Ship EF OLIVIA Collides with Cargo Vessel HAYRIYE ANA off Sicilian Coast
On April 22, the Italian National Operation Center reported a collision between container ship EF OLIVIA and cargo vessel HAYRIYE ANA, approximately 14 miles off capo Passero on the Southeastern tip of Sicily, near the ports of SYRACUSE and CATANIA. Italian Coast Guard swiftly responded to the incident, deploying a helicopter, airplane, and vessel for monitoring. Fortunately, no pollution was reported at the collision site.
HAYRIYE ANA sustained minor damages, while EF OLIVIA’s hull was punctured. Both vessels are currently redirected to the Sicilian Coast, moving northward with a status of “restricted manoeuvrability” according to Marinetraffic AIS data.
The cause of the collision remains undisclosed, although footage provided by the Guardia Costiera suggests adverse weather conditions may have played a role.
EF OLIVIA, a 42,200 dwt container ship managed by Peter Doehle, was scheduled to depart on Monday for the Italian Port of AUGUSTA. HAYRIYE ANA, a general cargo ship owned by a Turkish shipping company, departed from ISTANBUL on April 19th for A CORUNA, Spain.
Recent inspections revealed deficiencies in HAYRIYE ANA, with Chinese maritime authorities reporting issues with the vessel’s VDR in November 2023 and Greek authorities reporting additional deficiencies in January 2024.
