DP World awarded Chattogram Terminal as legal challenge looms

The Bangladesh government has awarded the New Mooring Container Terminal at Chattogram Port to DP World.

The decision has drawn criticism at home. Opponents question transparency, national control, and job security.

The Bangladesh Jubo Arthanitibid Forum has filed a legal challenge. The High Court is set to rule on December 4, 2025. Authorities have paused the handover until the court delivers its verdict.

If the court backs the government, the terminal could face disruption during the transition.

Industry sources warn of possible labor strikes and work stoppages. These could slow cargo handling and container movement. Vessel delays and berth congestion could follow.

Customs clearance may also slow if staff join protests. Truck congestion could affect yard operations. A management change could create confusion over procedures and tariffs.

Political demonstrations could further disrupt access to the port. Security concerns may also rise.

Logistics providers warn of wider supply chain impact if unrest continues. Some operators advise customers to move urgent cargo early. Others recommend alternative shipping routes if delays escalate.
