Class society DNV has formally launched CFARER, a new maritime software company spun out from its former DNV Maritime Software business. The new brand becomes operational immediately, with majority ownership retained by DNV and a strategic minority stake held by Wilhelmsen Port Services.
CFARER will continue to offer its software tools — including ShipManager, Hull Manager, and Navigator Port — while also integrating Wilhelmsen’s Always on Board port clearance solution via its Diize subsidiary. All products will remain supported and fully operational under the new brand, the company said.
“This is a structural shift, not just a rebrand. CFARER is now a standalone business with its own leadership, strategy, and commercial direction. By operating independently, CFARER can focus entirely on building better software, responding faster to user needs, and partnering more openly across the industry,” noted Erik Staubo, CEO of CFARER
The company’s name — CFARER — is intended as a nod to the seafarers who rely on its digital tools every day, both offshore and onshore.
The new structure also involves Papillon, a maritime tech investor and company builder, who will guide operational growth and long-term strategy.
The first steps under the new structure include combining Navigator Port and Always on Board into a new CFARER Port Clearance product group. Other software like ShipManager and Hull Manager will see updates through 2025, with all tools available in both cloud-based and classic versions.
CFARER’s leadership is expected to expand the business globally, while keeping the door open for future strategic partnerships or changes in ownership structure. DNV’s Kenneth Vareide (pictured), now Chairman of CFARER, said the spin-out gives the brand the freedom to move faster while keeping trust and continuity for customers.
