DACHSER is expanding its logistics center in Freiburg to launch food logistics operations in southwest Germany.
The company is building a new temperature-controlled terminal at its site in the Breisgau industrial park near Freiburg. Construction began in August 2025 and the facility will open in June 2026.
DACHSER held a topping-out ceremony for the project on 5 December.
The company is investing €12 million in the expansion. The project will create around 40 new jobs, adding to the site’s current workforce of 190 employees.
New cold chain facility under construction
The new building will connect directly to the existing terminal. DACHSER is constructing a refrigerated hall with 3,200 square metres of space for food handling. The hall will operate at temperatures between 2°C and 7°C and will include 32 truck loading bays.
DACHSER is also expanding its industrial and consumer goods operations. A new 2,700-square-metre hall with eight truck gates will support these activities. Some of the space can also be used for warehousing.
Michael Gaudlitz, General Manager of the Freiburg site, said the expansion will strengthen DACHSER’s regional position and improve service for both food and industrial customers.
Focus on sustainable operations
DACHSER will install a new photovoltaic system with a capacity of about 500 kWp. Combined with existing solar panels, the site will be able to generate nearly 1 MWp of power.
The company will also expand its electric vehicle infrastructure. It will add 20 new charging points for electric trucks, bringing the site’s total to 32. A new truck park with space for 125 vehicles is also under construction.
Food logistics added to local portfolio
The expansion adds Food Logistics as a new service at the Freiburg site. DACHSER will transport chilled and non-chilled products such as meat, dairy, wine, baked goods, and convenience foods.
The company plans to serve retailers, wholesalers, restaurants, and food producers across Germany and neighbouring countries.
Stefan Behrendt, Managing Director for Food Logistics at DACHSER, said the region shows strong demand for professional food logistics. He highlighted the area’s food producers and retail strength as key growth drivers.
Freiburg site plays role in e-mobility strategy
DACHSER’s Freiburg operation is also part of the company’s e-mobility network, along with Hamburg and Malsch. These locations test electric trucks, charging systems, and energy management tools.
Since late 2024, DACHSER has served the entire city of Freiburg using only electric trucks and cargo bikes. The site currently operates 11 electric trucks and one electric yard vehicle.
The company has invested in charging stations, battery storage, a transformer station, and on-site solar systems to support zero-emission operations.
