COSCO signs historic order for 87 vessels with CSSC

China COSCO Shipping Group has signed a large-scale shipbuilding agreement with China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC) for the construction of 87 new vessels. The order is valued at more than RMB 50 billion, making it the largest domestic shipbuilding contract completed between a Chinese shipowner and a Chinese shipbuilder to date.

The contract covers multiple types of vessels that will serve COSCO’s container, bulk, energy and specialized transportation businesses. The program includes ultra-large container ships, bulk carriers, very large crude carriers, grain carriers, medium-range tankers, multi-purpose heavy lift vessels, and smaller container units. Construction will be allocated to several CSSC yards, including Jiangnan Shipyard, Dalian Shipbuilding, Guangzhou Shipyard International, Wuchang Shipbuilding, Beihai Shipbuilding and Chengxi Shipyard.

The agreement supports COSCO’s fleet renewal plans and expands its capacity across major shipping segments. Over the past year, the company has continued to place newbuilding orders to modernize its fleet and meet long-term transportation needs in container, bulk and energy markets.

COSCO and its subsidiaries have also been active in the bulk carrier sector throughout 2025. Earlier orders included Capesize vessels for commodity transportation projects, along with additional bulk carriers and oil tankers purchased through COSCO Shipping Development.

The new contract strengthens cooperation between two of China’s largest maritime groups and further increases domestic shipbuilding activity at major CSSC facilities.
