On 29 August 2024, COSCO SHIPPING Heavy Industry and COSCO SHIPPING Container Lines signed a contract in Shanghai for the construction of twelve 14,000 TEU container ships featuring dual-fuel methanol propulsion.

This latest order underscores COSCO SHIPPING’s commitment to green and low-carbon development, as it strives to build an environmentally friendly fleet and minimize the environmental and ecological impact of its operations.

These new vessels represent a new generation of ship design, developed collaboratively by COSCO SHIPPING Lines, COSCO SHIPPING Heavy Industry, and the China Shipbuilding and Ocean Engineering Design and Research Institute. Furthermore, measuring 335.9 meters in length and 51 meters in width, the ships feature an innovative design that includes an invisible bulbous bow, a stern energy-saving device, and advanced technology.

With a substantial loading capacity of 13,700 standard containers and a high capacity for reefer boxes, these vessels are equipped to deliver high-quality, end-to-end cold chain services to customers globally.

The ships will also be outfitted with the world’s most powerful permanent magnet shaft generator, a bow wind deflector, an air lubrication system for the hull, and intelligent systems developed by COSCO SHIPPING.

These systems comply with the third phase of EEDI energy efficiency standards and the latest cybersecurity regulations. Additionally, the dual-fuel main engine and generator, both powered by methanol, will significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Meanwhile, COSCO SHIPPING Holdings is prioritizing both the construction of new ships and the modernization of existing ones to expedite the green and low-carbon transition of its fleet. The company has placed orders for twelve 24,000 TEU container ships powered by dual-fuel methanol propulsion and has signed contracts to convert eight vessels to the same dual-fuel system.

In addition, COSCO is actively promoting environmentally sustainable practices, including all-electric ship operations and biofuel pilot projects, which are driving the company forward in this new competitive landscape.
