Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP) via its Energy Transition Fund (ETF) has signed memorandums of understanding with BW Epic Kosan and Færder Tankers to develop ammonia-fuelled carriers.
The first MOU is with Færder Tankers to develop a 50,000 cu m ammonia carrier. This vessel will feature high manoeuvrability and ship-to-ship bunkering capabilities, with a first vessel expected to join the fleet in the second half of 2028.
The second MOU with BW Epic Kosan aims to develop handysize ammonia carriers equipped with dual-fuel ammonia engines and bunkering capabilities. BW Epic Kosan will time charter a number of dual-fuel ammonia gas carriers ranging from 9,000 cu m to 35,000 cu m to ETF or its subsidiaries.
CIP is also in advanced discussions with major shipping operators to develop very large ammonia carriers (VLACs).
Niels Lindegaard, senior business advisor at CIP, commented: “Our objective is to facilitate the green transportation of clean ammonia by utilising the cargo as fuel. Partnering with innovative shipping companies like BW Epic Kosan and Færder Tankers is crucial to achieving this goal and to lead in the field of clean ammonia.”
