The Contship Group’s multimodal transport operator, Hannibal, has announced a new direct service connecting Northern Europe and Southern Italy.

Beginning on 3 December 2024, the service will link the Milan Rail Hub in Melzo to the Marcianise-Maddaloni terminal in Caserta, addressing the rising demand for sustainable and efficient logistics solutions while solidifying Contship’s position in European logistics.

The Melzo-Marcianise connection will operate with two weekly round trips—departing Melzo on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and Marcianise on Wednesdays and Fridays. To meet growing demand, the frequency is set to increase to three weekly connections starting in the first quarter of 2025.

Andrea Spagnuolo, Sales & Business Development Manager of Contship Italia, mentioned: “The new service allows us to connect Southern Italy with Northern Europe, taking advantage of the connections from our hub in Melzo to and from the Netherlands. We are committed to offering transport solutions tailored to our customers’ needs. Our flexibility in transporting a wide range of units and our value-added services, such as warehousing and transhipment of goods on trucks, allow us to adapt to the specific requirements of each shipment.”

With a capacity of 32 units per train, the service accommodates all container types, thanks to the use of low-loading wagons. Rail traction will be handled by Oceanogate, the Contship Group’s rail freight transport specialist. This initiative reinforces Rail Hub Milan’s role as a critical gateway to Northern Europe and major Mediterranean ports, further enhancing the Contship Group’s intermodal logistics network.

According to the statement, this new service expands Hannibal’s offerings and solidifies the Contship Group’s position as a trusted partner for businesses aiming to streamline their logistics. By prioritizing innovation and sustainability, the Melzo-Marcianise connection exemplifies the potential of intermodal logistics to drive decarbonization and improve transport efficiency across Italy.

He added, “We can integrate the offer by guaranteeing efficient customs operations with containers on the ground, as well as first and last-mile transports by truck.”
