A consortium, led by CMA CGM (67%), along with Banque des Territoires (23%), CCI Lyon Métropole Saint-Etienne Roanne (4%), and CCI Métropolitaine Aix-Marseille-Provence (4%), has been chosen by the CNR (Compagnie Nationale du Rhône) for a 30-year sub-concession to operate and develop the container terminal at Lyon Edouard Herriot Port.

The project aims to develop river and rail traffic along the Mediterranean-Rhône-Saône axis, leveraging the port facilities in Marseille through infrastructure modernization, new service development, and encouragement of modal shift.

The Lyon Edouard Herriot Port is expected to see significant investments totaling around €40 million (US$42 million) to enhance its capacity and modernize its infrastructure. These investments include terminal expansion works, modernization of existing infrastructure, creation of new railway tracks, the planned electrification of handling equipment, IT and operational upgrades, and the sustainable development of the terminal.

By 2028, the terminal is expected to have the capacity to handle 230,000 TEUs.

Furthermore, the French ocean carrier and its partners aim to promote modal shift, open the terminal to all operators, and provide competitive, efficient, and low-carbon solutions. The consortium plans to double the river traffic handled at the terminal by 2032, connecting the Rhône-Alpes Region to the Port of Marseille and accommodating various river operators and maritime carriers.

Emmanuel Delachambre, Vice President in charge of terminals at the CMA CGM Group, stated: “This project reflects our ambition, alongside our partners, to modernize and strengthen the strategic role of Lyon Edouard Herriot Port through sustainable logistics solutions and by developing modal shift, primarily from the Port of Marseille Fos, to benefit regional, national, and international economic stakeholders.”
