On January 5, 2005, CMA CGM officially confirmed that it has completed the acquisition of the French shipping group Delmas, marking a major milestone in the company’s global expansion. With this transaction, CMA CGM becomes the world’s third-largest ocean carrier, solidifying its position among the industry’s top players.
Delmas, a longstanding subsidiary of the Bolloré Group, is well known for its strong specialization in Africa-related trade lanes. The acquisition enables CMA CGM to significantly expand its network across less-developed north–south routes, enhancing its service offering in emerging markets.
Strengthening Africa and Mediterranean Trade
Delmas’ unit Sudcargos is also active in ro-ro operations between the Mediterranean and Maghreb countries. Integrating these services into CMA CGM’s portfolio further boosts the group’s presence in the region and strengthens its short-sea transportation capabilities.
A $600 Million Deal Announced in 2005
The acquisition was first revealed in September 2005, with CMA CGM agreeing to purchase Delmas for $600 million. Following the completion of the transaction, Delmas will continue to operate under its own brand and will remain headquartered in Le Havre, France.
New Leadership Appointment
As part of the post-acquisition structure, Alain Wils has been appointed President of Delmas. His leadership is expected to support CMA CGM’s strategic objectives, particularly in expanding its influence across African markets.
Industry Significance
The 2005 acquisition marks a major step in CMA CGM’s long-term growth strategy. Key industry impacts include:
- Expanded presence on north–south and Africa trade routes
- Increased capacity and competitive strength globally
- Enhanced ro-ro and Mediterranean–Maghreb service offerings
- Strengthened positioning as a top-tier global carrier
With Delmas’ well-established African network and regional expertise, CMA CGM aims to accelerate its growth in developing markets and reinforce its global leadership in container shipping.
