Standards use weather forecasts and anti-rolling devices to optimize stowage
Tokyo – ClassNK has released three new guidelines to make container shipping safer and more efficient. The standards focus on weather-based route planning, anti-rolling devices, and container stowage.
The guidelines include:
-
Safety of Maritime Cargo Based on Weather Forecasts – Defines how to use short-term weather forecasts to plan routes, correct loads, and assess lashing strength. ClassNK analyzed over one million cases of metocean data and AIS records to develop standard evaluation methods and safety margins.
-
Anti-Rolling Devices – Establishes technical and inspection requirements for devices like anti-rolling tanks. It also explains how to evaluate roll-reduction performance.
-
Container Stowage and Securing Arrangements (Edition 3.3) – Updates previous stowage guidelines to account for weather forecasts and roll-reduction effects.
ClassNK says the new rules will prevent cargo collapse, optimize stowage, and allow ships to safely carry more containers.
The organization expects the guidelines to help shipping companies cut risks, improve efficiency, and standardize safety practices across the industry.
