ClassNK has granted an Approval in Principle (AiP) for an ammonia-fuelled ammonia bunkering vessel, developed collaboratively by Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha (NYK Line) and LMG Marin AS (a Seatrium Group member).

As the maritime industry moves towards decarbonization, ammonia fuel is anticipated to play a significant role, making bunkering vessels crucial in the fuel supply chain.

This particular vessel, a joint effort between NYK Line which is pioneering in ammonia-fueled vessels, and Seatrium, the largest shipyard in Singapore, is aimed at enhancing Singapore’s status as a top global bunkering port.

Designed primarily by LMG Marin AS, the vessel features dual-fuel engines from IHI Power Systems and a bunkering boom from TB Global Technology, ensuring safe and efficient ammonia fuel transfer.

A safety verification was also performed via a HAZID session with key stakeholders.

After assessing the necessary evaluations, ClassNK confirmed compliance with the set standards and issued the AiP. The AiP also references the latest ‘INTERIUM GUIDELINES FOR THE SAFETY OF SHIPS USING AMMONIA AS FUEL’, approved at MSC 109 in December.
