ClassNK grants AiP for large ammonia-powered carrier

ClassNK has awarded an Approval in Principle (AiP) for a large ammonia-powered ammonia carrier, jointly developed by Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL), Namura Shipbuilding, and Mitsubishi Shipbuilding.

Designed for low-emission transport of large ammonia volumes, the certification confirms the vessel’s feasibility from both regulatory and safety perspectives.

As a zero-carbon fuel, ammonia is gaining traction in power generation since it emits no CO₂ when combusted. This new carrier features larger cargo tanks than Very Large Gas Carriers (VLGCs) and Very Large Ammonia Carriers (VLACs), while utilizing ammonia as fuel to reduce emissions.

Additionally, it complies with entry restrictions at major Japanese power plants while maintaining compatibility with existing VLGC infrastructure for loading, discharging, and terminal connections.

ClassNK reviewed the vessel’s design under its Guidelines for Ships Using Alternative Fuels and the IGC Code, conducting a HAZID risk assessment to address ammonia toxicity. After verifying compliance with prescribed safety requirements, the AiP was granted.
