bound4blue secures LR validation for Pwind Calculation

bound4blue has received Lloyd’s Register (LR) validation for its wind propulsion system force matrix methodology. The approach calculates Pwind, the propulsive power from wind-assisted propulsion systems, in line with IMO guidance.

This step gives shipowners a trusted way to calculate Pwind without full-scale testing, cutting time and cost. It also unlocks benefits under FuelEU Maritime and helps with EEXI/EEDI compliance.

The methodology uses CFD-based calculations validated with wind tunnel testing. The first installation to benefit is the M.V. Atlantic Orchard, which carries four bound4blue eSAILs®.

“Validation by Lloyd’s Register is a key enabler for shipowners who want to realize the full value of wind propulsion,” said Alberto Llopis, Head of Aerodynamics at bound4blue.

LR’s validation means any new eSAIL® project using the same approach can obtain verified Pwind faster, making future projects easier to approve.

Demand for wind propulsion is growing under FuelEU Maritime, which rewards wind use by relaxing GHG targets. Bound4blue has recently secured orders from Maersk Tankers, Marflet Marine, Klaveness Combination Carriers, and others.
