Bilbao Port Authority has become the latest member of the Waterborne Technology Platform, a collaboration that brings together shipbuilders, shipowners, maritime equipment makers, research institutes, and EU institutions.
The platform fosters dialogue among stakeholders in the waterborne transport sector, aiming to coordinate R&D efforts, set long-term goals, and promote sustainable, safe, and competitive maritime transport. It also focuses on financing, education, and training initiatives across the sector.
Ivan Jiménez Aira, President of Bilbao Port Authority, said joining the platform is “a great honour” and highlighted the port’s commitment to sustainable transport and decarbonisation. He noted Bilbao’s ongoing BilbOPS project and the growing role of ports as energy hubs supporting alternative fuels and shore power.
“Through this platform, we look forward to sharing ideas and best practices with other members to drive greener, smarter, and more resilient waterborne transport,” Jiménez Aira added.
Jaap Gebraad, Secretary General of Waterborne TP, welcomed Bilbao Port Authority, saying their involvement strengthens the “Ports & Logistics” working group and contributes to shaping broader research agendas across the sector.
