Maritime Associations Urge UN Action for Increased Military Presence in Middle East Amid Rising Threats
Sixteen prominent maritime associations, including ASA, Bimco, CLIA, and others, have penned a letter to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, highlighting the urgent need for enhanced military presence in the Middle East to safeguard vessels and seafarers amidst escalating threats. The appeal underscores the importance of member states upholding their obligations under international law, particularly emphasizing freedom of navigation as outlined in UNCLOS and other relevant regulations.
The letter advocates for heightened military missions and patrols in the region to address the severe and evolving risks faced by shipping. Additionally, the signatories call for concerted efforts to secure the release of seafarers aboard the seized vessel, MSC Aries.
MSC Aries, a 15,000 TEU container ship, was intercepted by Iranian forces in the Strait of Hormuz on April 13, carrying 25 crew members. Iran’s rationale for the seizure, citing alleged ties to Israel, has escalated tensions between the two nations since early April. Despite assurances from MSC regarding the safety of the crew, efforts are underway to collaborate with Iranian authorities for the prompt release of both crew and cargo.
