The Port of Antwerp-Bruges has taken a significant step toward sustainability with the arrival of six energy-efficient tugboats, including the pioneering Volta 1, Europe’s first fully electric RSD (Reversed Stern Drive) tugboat.

This milestone aligns with the Belgian port’s ambitious goal of achieving climate neutrality by 2050.

Volta 1 sets a new standard in maritime innovation as an entirely emission-free tugboat. Equipped with a 70-ton bollard pull and powerful batteries that recharge in just two hours via a 1.5 MW charging station, it represents a groundbreaking advancement in port operations.

“With this new generation of energy-efficient tugboats, we take a significant step forward in our transition to a climate-neutral fleet. This investment demonstrates our commitment to sustainable innovation. The Volta 1 is a groundbreaking addition to our fleet and a beacon for the entire maritime sector,” stated Rob Smeets, Chief Operations Officer of the Port of Antwerp-Bruges.

Another five diesel-powered RSD tugboats, all designed with dual-bow versatility for optimal maneuverability in both forward and reverse towing, will join Volta 1. These diesel-powered vessels feature an advanced exhaust gas after-treatment system and energy-efficient designs, which reduce emissions and fuel consumption.

Constructed by Damen Shipyards Group following an order from the Antwerp-Bruges Port Authority in 2023, the tugboats were built at Damen’s Song Cam Shipyard in Vietnam. After their launch earlier this year, the vessels underwent rigorous port tests, commissioning, and sea trials.

“The arrival of these new tugboats marks a new chapter in the sustainability of our port and strengthens our position as the economic engine of Flanders. Just like with the Hydrotug and the Methatug, the Volta 1 once again confirms our pioneering role in the energy transition and environmentally friendly shipping,” mentioned Johan Klaps, Port Alderman of the City of Antwerp.

In October, they were transported over 10,000 kilometres aboard the heavy-lift ship Jumbo Kinetic, with stopovers in Singapore and Las Palmas, before arriving safely in Antwerp. In the coming months, the tugboats will undergo final preparations, including technical setups, crew training, and the integration of the Volta 1 with its newly installed charging infrastructure at the Nautical Operational Cluster (NOC).

These additions are part of the port’s broader greening programme, aimed at modernizing and decarbonizing its fleet, which accounts for nearly 85% of its CO₂ emissions. Alongside earlier projects such as the Hydrotug (hydrogen-powered) and Methatug (methanol-powered), the latest tugboats underscore the port’s commitment to innovative and sustainable maritime practices.
