Salvage crews have secured all unaffected containers on the MV Mississippi as of 11 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 14. Work continues to secure the containers that fell from two damaged bays.

The Unified Command, including federal, state, and local agencies, is leading the operation at Pier G in Long Beach. Crews are using surveys, drones, and dive operations to guide the next steps.

“In just a few days, we have made significant progress in securing the vessel cargo and recovering containers,” said Capt. Stacey Crecy, Commander of U.S. Coast Guard Sector Los Angeles – Long Beach. She credited vessel managers, port officials, and ILWU labor for working together safely.

So far, 32 containers have been recovered from the water. No pollution has been observed since the initial leak from the emissions barge was stopped on Sept. 10.

Cargo operations at the Port of Long Beach remain open and mostly unaffected. A 500-yard safety zone is in place around the vessel. The Coast Guard and port partners are guiding ship movements and warning mariners to stay clear of the area.

The Coast Guard and National Transportation Safety Board are investigating the cause of the incident.
