The Alabama Port Authority has ordered two Konecranes Rubber-Tired Gantry (RTG) cranes for its new Montgomery Intermodal Container Transfer Facility (ICTF). The order was placed in Q3 2025, with delivery expected in Q4 2026.
Container traffic at the Port of Mobile grew from 502,000 TEUs in 2021 to over 563,000 TEUs in 2023. To handle future growth, the RTGs will support efficient transfers between rail and truck. They will form the backbone of operations at the ICTF.
The cranes feature Active Load Control to prevent container sway. Konecranes’ Smart Features improve safety, speed, and automation readiness. Auto-steering, Auto-positioning, and Auto-TOS Reporting optimize container placement and link directly with the terminal operating system. Stack Collision Prevention, Auto Path Optimizing, and Auto-Truck Guiding enhance safety and yard efficiency.
This is the Alabama Port Authority’s first investment in Konecranes RTGs. The partnership dates back to 2001, when a Konecranes Gottwald Mobile Harbor Crane was delivered. That crane still handles containers and breakbulk cargo.
Doug Otto, Interim Director and CEO of the Alabama Port Authority, said: “Konecranes’ reliability gave us confidence in this investment. These RTGs will set the standard for efficiency as we launch the terminal.”
Alan Garcia, Director of Regional Sales Americas at Konecranes, said: “Customers turn to Konecranes when performance and reliability matter. We are proud to support this project.”
Konecranes offers a flexible path to port automation. Terminals can adopt smart features first, then move to supervised or remote operation, improving productivity and safety step by step.
