ABS has signed a memorandum of understanding with the University of Michigan, Singapore Institute of Technology (SIT), and Sea Forrest Technologies to advance maritime electrification and battery safety.
The collaboration will focus on joint research projects, publications, and workshops aimed at improving battery technologies and accelerating the adoption of clean energy solutions in the maritime sector.
ABS Chief Technology Officer Patrick Ryan said electrification offers real benefits for efficiency and regulatory compliance. “We are proud to work with these leading research institutions and innovators to strengthen maritime safety around these important technologies,” he said.
University of Michigan Dean Karen A. Thole said the partnership connects academia, industry, and technology development to help move promising ideas from the lab to the marketplace.
Sea Forrest CEO George Lee called the agreement a “critical step” toward faster battery approvals and mass adoption of clean energy solutions for decarbonizing shipping.
SIT Deputy President Bernard Nee highlighted the initiative’s value for students and faculty, offering hands-on opportunities to develop practical, safe solutions to support the industry’s transition to a sustainable future.
