ABS has granted Approval in Principle (AIP) to Encomara for its Squid™ system, an innovative solution that adapts proven disconnectable mooring technology for floating offshore wind projects.

The Squid™ system evolves the long-established Disconnectable Turret Buoy (DTB) concept used in floating production. By relying on familiar offshore technology and installation methods, the system aims to improve safety and streamline turbine installation and off-station operations.

“Floating offshore wind is advancing quickly, and innovation in proven technologies such as disconnectable systems is key to safe and efficient deployment,” said Rob Langford, ABS Vice President, Global Offshore Renewables. “Our AIP process provides early technical review and Class requirements to support developments like this.”

Encomara Managing Director Ian Donald said the system could significantly improve efficiency and project scheduling. “This is a prime example of repurposing decades of North Sea engineering expertise to accelerate offshore wind deployment. ABS AIP certification confirms our design meets international standards and marks an important milestone toward realizing the potential of Squid™.”

ABS, drawing on more than 70 years of offshore experience, continues to assess new technologies that support safe offshore operations and energy transition goals.
