A floating nuclear power plant design developed by Samsung Heavy Industries has received Approval in Principle from ABS.
The design, known as FSMR, features two small modular reactors developed by the Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute. The initial configuration uses two SMART100 reactors.
The concept separates reactor and power generation functions into dedicated compartments. This approach allows flexibility to adopt different SMR types in the future. The design also integrates the reactor and safety systems into a single containment vessel. This enhances safety, simplifies testing, and shortens construction timelines.
ABS carried out a detailed hazard identification study on the non-reactor elements of the design to assess potential risks.
ABS said floating nuclear power shows strong potential and highlighted its focus on safe adoption of nuclear technology at sea.
Samsung Heavy Industries said the approval marks a key milestone in developing the offshore nuclear power generation market. The company plans to build on its offshore plant expertise to advance safe and cost-efficient solutions.
KAERI said the approval validates the innovation behind the SMART100 reactor and supports South Korea’s ambition to become a leader in marine nuclear power.
The SMART100 reactor incorporates passive safety systems. These systems maintain cooling without external power, enabling safe shutdown during emergency conditions.
