ABS has granted Approval in Principle (AiP) to MODEC, Inc. for a new offshore liquefied CO2 (LCO2) floating storage and injection unit (FSIU). The design was developed in collaboration with Mitsui OSK Lines (MOL).
The FSIU eliminates the need for onshore facilities, storing and injecting LCO2 directly at sea. It can inject up to 10 million tonnes of CO2 annually and has a minimum storage capacity of 100,000 cubic meters. ABS reviewed the design for class and statutory compliance.
The unit receives low-pressure LCO2 from carriers, converts it to high-pressure storage, and injects it into subsea wells. Tandem loading at the aft and side-by-side loading at midship allow continuous injection without interruptions. Diesel generators with onboard carbon capture minimize emissions from operations.
Miguel Hernandez, ABS Senior VP, said the unit supports safe and efficient carbon sequestration. Arata Kamishohara, MODEC VP, highlighted the company’s experience with FPSO systems and CO2 injection, noting the project aims for costs below $5 per tonne of CO2.
