ABS has granted Approval in Principle (AIP) to Lemissoler Corporate Management Ltd. for its new watertight hatch cover design for bulk carriers.
The design targets gearless bulk carriers and features an innovative seal arrangement to improve water tightness. It also offers an enclosed deck for better crew protection, lowers deck maintenance, and increases cargo capacity.
ABS reviewed the design according to class requirements, including structural plans, finite element strength analysis (FEM), and the hydraulic system.
Joshua Divin, ABS Senior Vice President, Marine Business Development, noted the benefits for larger gearless vessels like Kamsarmax. “These advanced hatches protect cargo, allow operation at reduced freeboards, and improve the Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI), boosting environmental performance,” he said.
Philippos Philis, Lemissoler CEO, said the design reflects the company’s focus on innovation and sustainability. “Our hatch cover system enhances cargo protection and capacity while supporting energy efficiency and decarbonization. Partnering with ABS on this project highlights our commitment to advancing maritime engineering,” he added.
