Associated British Ports (ABP), one of the UK’s leading port operators, has taken a major step in its vision for the Port of Barrow by submitting a planning application for the country’s largest floating solar project, Barrow EnergyDock.

This marks a key milestone in ABP’s broader Masterplan, launched last September, aimed at fostering growth and strengthening the local economy.

Set to be installed in Cavendish Dock, Barrow EnergyDock will significantly expand green energy capacity, particularly for Barrow’s advanced engineering sector. The floating solar array will generate up to 40MWp, enough to power approximately 14,000 homes annually. By supplying renewable energy directly to the port’s advanced manufacturing sector, the project aims to stabilize electricity costs while promoting sustainability.

The solar panels will be mounted on floating pontoons, optimally angled for energy generation, and secured by an anchoring system. The array will cover about one-third of the dock’s surface, consisting of approximately 47,000 panels. Existing leisure activities will continue, with potential for future expansion.

By opting for floating solar rather than land-based installations, ABP ensures that valuable port space remains available for operations and manufacturing, preserving jobs and economic opportunities.

Bryan Davies, Divisional Port Manager (Northwest and Scotland), ABP, commented: “We’re excited to see the planning application submitted for Barrow EnergyDock and to see the first element of ABP’s Port of Barrow Masterplan start to take shape. ABP’s masterplanning team worked with the local Barrow team to design a Masterplan focussed on driving growth and strengthening the local economy in response to the significant investment coming to the region over the next ten to twenty years. Barrow EnergyDock is a pivotal step in realising our vision for a prosperous and sustainable future for Barrow.”

To support the planning process, ABP partnered with Green Cat Renewables, an environmental and engineering consultancy, and conducted two public consultations last autumn to engage with the local community. Additionally, ABP’s marine consultancy, ABPmer, carried out marine ecology and coastal waterbird surveys, with findings indicating no significant environmental impacts.

Kirsten Abbott, Group Commercial Manager (Energy) at ABP stated: “We are thrilled to be submitting the planning application for the Barrow EnergyDock, which is a testament to ABP’s commitment to sustainability and innovation. It aligns with the goals set out in ABP’s sustainability strategy – Ready for Tomorrow – and represents a significant step towards a greener future for the Port.”
