ABB will supply advanced power distribution and propulsion systems for seven new all-electric ferries owned by Caledonian Maritime Assets Ltd (CMAL) in Scotland. Built by Remontowa Shipbuilding S.A. in Poland, the vessels will be delivered between late 2027 and early 2029. ABB will also equip several CMAL ferry terminals, including Kennacraig and Port Askaig, with shore connection systems to provide clean power from the grid.
Enhancing Sustainable Ferry Operations
The 50-meter ferries, part of CMAL’s Small Vessel Replacement Programme, will strengthen connectivity and sustainability in the Clyde and Hebrides region. Each ferry will carry up to 200 passengers and 24 cars, while one larger vessel will hold 250 passengers and 16 cars.
“We appreciate ABB’s expertise in power and electrification,” said Michal Jaguszewski, Director of Commerce at Remontowa Shipbuilding. “Together, we’ll deliver vessels that advance low-emission transport across Scotland’s western isles.”
Compact and Efficient Power Systems
ABB’s Compact Onboard DC Grid
enables efficient, distributed power management in space-constrained vessels. The system includes HES880 inverters, AXME Marine Motors, and an integrated power and energy management platform, ensuring flexible, high-efficiency operations.
Clean Energy from Shore to Ship
ABB’s shore connection solution allows ferries to shut down their engines while docked, cutting CO₂ emissions and noise in port areas. The cleaner power system supports CMAL’s long-term decarbonization strategy and aligns with the UK’s goal to eliminate port emissions.
“These ferries will boost capacity and bring clean propulsion to island communities,” said Jim Anderson, Director of Vessels at CMAL. “ABB’s integrated systems will ensure reliable and efficient operations.”
Juha Koskela, President of ABB Marine & Ports, added: “This project demonstrates the Compact Onboard DC Grid’s capability to power smaller, short-distance vessels efficiently. It’s a major step toward greener, smarter maritime transport.”
