Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, and China have signed an agreement on the establishment of an intermodal cargo terminal in the port of Baku.
The project involves the construction and development of infrastructure for an intermodal cargo terminal covering 40 hectares at the Baku suburb of Alyat. Initial capacity will be up to 350,000 containers a year.
The project aims to boost container train traffic on the Trans-Caspian International Transport Route (TITR), also known as the Middle Corridor.
The Middle Corridor is a trade route from Southeast Asia and China to Europe via Kazakhstan, the Caspian Sea, Azerbaijan, Georgia and Turkey and is the shortest route between Western China and Europe.
Trade volumes along the Middle Corridor are leaping, surpassing 3m tonnes last year and on track to hit around 4.2m tonnes this year.
