Bound4blue has solidified its leadership in the shipping industry’s transformation with a significant new agreement with Maersk Tankers.

This contract is the largest to date for the company’s wind-assisted propulsion systems (WAPS), involving the installation of 20 eSAIL® suction sails on five MR tankers in 2025 and 2026.

Furthermore, Maersk Tankers selected the eSAIL® as their preferred solution, in collaboration with green technology partner Njord, who conducted a thorough evaluation of various wind-assisted propulsion systems to ensure the best environmental and commercial outcomes for the project vessels and their anticipated future operations.

The eSAIL® systems function autonomously by harnessing air to create lift, providing exceptional propulsion efficiency and significantly reducing fuel consumption, operational expenses, and emissions.

The units will be installed on Maersk Tacoma, Maersk Tampa, Maersk Tangier, Maersk Teesport, and Maersk Tokyo, with expectations to achieve substantial reductions in fuel consumption and CO2 emissions for each vessel.

This contract highlights bound4blue’s successful year, complementing new orders from renowned companies such as Klaveness Combination Carriers, Eastern Pacific Shipping, Odfjell, Marflet Marine, Amasus, and Louis Dreyfus Company.

“The trust Maersk Tankers has placed in our technology reinforces the proven capabilities of our solution in reducing fuel consumption and emissions, while contributing to CII and FuelEU regulatory compliance. Designed to operate safely in challenging conditions, our system is particularly well-suited for safe, high performing and cost-efficient operation on tankers. We’re excited to work alongside Maersk Tankers as they progress in their decarbonization efforts,” stated José Miguel Bermúdez, CEO and co-founder at bound4blue.
