DP World’s Southampton Terminal Successfully Accommodates First Simultaneous ULCV Berthing” DP World’s Southampton terminal accomplished a significant milestone by hosting an ultra-large container vessel (ULCV) at berth 2/3 during its inaugural simultaneous ULCV berthing operation. Associated British Ports (ABP) highlighted that previously, ULCV calls at Southampton were limited to the SCT 5 berth. However, through successful collaboration and a meticulously executed maneuver led by highly skilled marine pilots, the port facilitated the berthing of a ship at SCT 2/3.

Steve Masters, Southampton Harbour Master, commended the team’s expertise and dedication, emphasizing their role in ensuring the operation’s safety and efficiency. Rigorous training and simulation exercises prepared pilots and tug crews for the intricate maneuvering required for CAT 7 Vessels like the MV Manilla Express.

With SCT 5 berth occupied by another ULCV, CMA CGM Louvre, ABP’s channel widening within Southampton’s Western Docks enables the movement of ultra-large vessels to other berths in DP World’s container terminal. Additionally, it facilitates the passage of large container ships past the port’s largest cruise ships.

Captains Noel Charlton and Chris Hoyle, responsible for piloting the Manilla Express, expressed the significance of this achievement in enabling the port to accommodate two of the largest container vessels simultaneously. Their collaborative efforts with the vessel’s crew, alongside specialized pilots, tug crews, and stakeholders, were instrumental in realizing this groundbreaking feat.
