Pacific Basin to Outfit Entire Fleet with GIT Coatings’ Graphene-Based Propeller Coating
Following a successful trial on a supramax bulk carrier, GIT Coatings will supply its advanced propeller coating to the entire Pacific Basin fleet. Approximately 40 Pacific Basin vessels slated for dry dock in 2024 will benefit from the XGIT-PROP coating, which exhibited promising vessel performance enhancements of up to 4% during a 2022 trial with Stolt Tankers.
This initiative marks the largest adoption of graphene-based propeller coatings in the dry bulk segment, underscoring Pacific Basin’s commitment to innovation. With a fleet of 116 vessels and operations spanning handysize and supramax sizes, the company aims to enhance efficiency and sustainability across its operations.
Sanjay Relan, Pacific Basin’s General Manager of Optimisation & Decarbonisation, highlighted the transition from silicone paint to XGIT-PROP hard coating as a proactive move towards sustainable practices. The biocide-free coating offers superior performance and longevity compared to traditional options, addressing concerns related to environmental impact and operational costs.
GIT Coatings emphasizes the significance of this collaboration in driving industry-wide sustainability efforts. Maiko Arras, the company’s Director of Business Development, commended Pacific Basin for leading the charge in adopting innovative solutions for improved vessel performance and environmental stewardship.
By leveraging graphene-based technology, Pacific Basin aims to not only enhance its fleet’s operational efficiency but also contribute to overall industry sustainability objectives, including improved CII ratings and RightShip GHG ratings.
