In a noteworthy development, CMA CGM and Air France-KLM have opted to conclude their air cargo alliance.
Originally formed in May 2022 when CMA CGM became a shareholder of Air France-KLM, the collaboration aimed to tap into the escalating global demand for freight transportation.
The decision to terminate the alliance is rooted in a dispute over flight slots at Amsterdam airport, raising concerns about regulatory approval, particularly in the pivotal US market.
In a joint statement, the companies attributed the dissolution to the “challenging regulatory environment in certain crucial markets.” Consequently, Air France-KLM and CMA CGM have announced the termination of existing agreements, effective from March 31, 2024.

As the companies go their separate ways in the air cargo sector, ongoing discussions focus on the terms of future collaboration as independent operators within the industry.
Despite the conclusion of the cargo alliance, CMA CGM will retain its position as a significant shareholder of Air France-KLM. However, the Marseille-based company will step down from the board of Air France-KLM on March 31.
