Wärtsilä has started construction of a 50 MW / 100 MWh battery energy storage system in central-eastern Belgium.

The project is being delivered for Gramme Storage 1 and aims to strengthen grid stability and support Belgium’s energy transition. The site is expected to be completed by Q2 2027. Wärtsilä booked the order in Q2 2025.

The system will provide key grid services, including frequency and voltage support. It will help balance electricity supply as renewable energy capacity continues to grow.

“This project underscores our commitment to dependable and flexible energy in Belgium,” said Guillaume Poncelet, Managing Director at Kallima Energies, the Liège-based developer of the project. He said battery storage will play a vital role in supporting the national power system.

Gramme 1 is Wärtsilä’s first energy storage project in Belgium to participate in the country’s Capacity Remuneration Mechanism. The scheme ensures security of supply by rewarding assets that deliver critical grid services.

Wärtsilä will supply its GridSolve Quantum2 energy storage system and its GEMS control and optimisation software. The company will deliver the project under an engineered equipment delivery contract, with guaranteed performance covered by a long-term service agreement.

With this project, Wärtsilä’s total energy storage portfolio in Europe now exceeds 2.7 GWh.
