The Suez Canal Authority (SCA) successfully completed the maritime salvage of the general cargo vessel FENER after it developed a 10-degree starboard list and nearly sank outside the waterway near Port-Said.
All 12 crew members are safe, with one receiving medical treatment for a dislocated shoulder at the SCA hospital.
SCA Chairman Adm. Ossama Rabiee said the Port-Said Port Control Office and Main Navigation Control Center acted immediately after receiving the shipmaster’s distress call at 11:30 pm. Two tugboats and three BAHAR-class speedboats were deployed to secure the vessel and evacuate the crew.
Adm. Rabiee praised the SCA teams for their rapid response. The Transit Department coordinated marine units. The Services Department provided ambulances, and Security and Public Relations handled logistics, including crew accommodation at their request.
The SCA’s Crisis Management Committee monitored the emergency around the clock. Adm. Rabiee highlighted new navigational and logistical services introduced by the SCA, including water ambulances and crew change services, ensuring client needs are met in both routine and emergency situations.
Lastly, the vessel measures 122 m in length, with a draft of 3.5 m and a tonnage of 4,000 tons. Adm. Rabiee concluded that the SCA is fully prepared to manage maritime emergencies professionally. SCA also uses experienced personnel, specialized salvage units, and integrated operational systems.
