HMM begins Wing Sail installation to cut emissions

HMM has installed a Wing Sail wind-assisted propulsion system on the 50,000-dwt MR tanker Oriental Aquamarine.

The Wing Sail uses wind power to generate additional thrust through aerodynamic lift, similar to an aircraft wing. The system supports low-carbon vessel operations and is well suited for ships without deck cargo, including bulk carriers and tankers.

HMM expects the technology to deliver fuel savings of around 5% to 20%, depending on operating conditions. Lower fuel consumption will also reduce carbon emissions and help vessels meet regulatory requirements, including the Carbon Intensity Indicator (CII), Greenhouse Gas Fuel Intensity (GFI), and FuelEU Maritime rules.

Over the next two years, HMM will monitor the system’s performance using operational data. Subject to the results, the company plans to expand Wing Sail installations across its bulk fleet.

An HMM spokesperson said the project builds on existing low-emission technologies already deployed across the fleet and reflects the company’s commitment to long-term sustainability.
