Drewry’s World Container Index rose 12% this week to $2,182 per 40ft container, marking its third consecutive weekly increase, driven by higher rates on Transpacific and Asia–Europe routes.

Transpacific headhaul rates rebounded after last week’s dip. Shanghai–New York climbed 19% to $3,293, while Shanghai–Los Angeles rose 18% to $2,474. Drewry reports 10 blank sailings scheduled next week on the Transpacific trade, supporting rates.

Asia–Europe also saw gains. Shanghai–Genoa increased 10% to $3,314, and Shanghai–Rotterdam rose 8% to $2,539. Rates on this route have now held steady or increased for three consecutive weeks.

Drewry attributes the strength to shifting seasonal patterns and strong December demand, now seen as the “new normal.” Early bookings ahead of the Lunar New Year in February 2026 are supporting the market, with further modest rate increases expected next week.
