Busan Port Authority (BPA) has launched South Korea’s first state-owned all-electric ferry. ABB supplied the vessel’s full electric propulsion and power systems. The ferry marks a major step in the country’s maritime decarbonization efforts.
Built by Kangnam Corporation, the vessel is the first in South Korea’s plan to replace 140 state-owned ships with cleaner-energy vessels by 2030. The program supports national environmental legislation and the Green New Deal, which targets net-zero emissions by 2050.
“This ferry shows BPA’s commitment to cleaner, smarter port operations,” said Woong-Ki Lee, BPA Port Manager. “It reduces local emissions and noise. ABB’s integrated propulsion and energy storage system delivers efficiency, safety, and reliability.”
The ferry has two 1,068-kWh battery packs. A full charge at 500 kW takes about 90 minutes. This allows around two hours of operation. While berthed, the vessel connects to the shore station for automatic charging.
ABB’s Onboard DC Grid
optimizes power distribution. PEMS increases reliability and fault tolerance. Remote monitoring via ABB Ability ensures safety and performance.

The ferry serves Busan’s North–South Port connection. It provides passengers a quieter, emission-free journey while advancing sustainable shipping in South Korea.
