Liebherr to deliver first STS cranes to Florida’s Gulf Coast

Liebherr Container Cranes has signed an agreement to supply two ship-to-shore (STS) cranes to Port Tampa Bay in Florida. The deal marks Liebherr’s first STS crane installation on Florida’s Gulf Coast.

The cranes will play a central role in the port’s “Vision 2030” development plan. They are expected to boost berth productivity, improve vessel turnaround times, and strengthen long-term operational reliability.

Manufactured at Liebherr’s Killarney facility in Ireland, the cranes feature a 60-metre outreach, a 50-metre lift height, and a 65-tonne twin-lift capacity. This allows the port to handle larger and wider container vessels more efficiently.

Each crane is equipped with advanced safety and performance systems, including anti-collision, anti-sway, and snag-load protection. Curve-going gantry technology improves movement along the quay. Remote diagnostics, ship-profiling, and predictive maintenance tools further reduce downtime and optimize operations.

The new equipment will support Port Tampa Bay’s container terminal expansion to 100 acres. The project includes additional paved storage, a third deep-water berth, and an on-dock, rail-served transload facility. The goal is to reach an annual throughput of one million TEUs and strengthen cargo flows across Central Florida and the wider Southeast.

The cranes also align with the port’s sustainability targets. Energy-efficient drives and regenerative power systems will help lower emissions and reduce overall energy consumption.

Liebherr USA will provide full service and technical support throughout the lifecycle of the cranes. The company operates service teams and spare-parts facilities across multiple U.S. states, including Florida, Virginia, Texas, and Mississippi.

Lastly, Liebherr said the contract reinforces its growing presence at major U.S. container ports and underlines its commitment to delivering long-term, high-performance solutions for American terminals.
