Neu Seeschiffahrt ramps up newbuild push with VLOC series in China

Germany’s Neu Seeschiffahrt has stepped up its fleet renewal drive with a major order for six 342,000 dwt very large ore carriers at China Merchants Shipbuilding Industry, marking one of the owner’s most aggressive newbuilding moves in nearly two decades.
The Hamburg-based company — usually a low-profile player in the newbuild market — has not been linked to orders since the mid-2000s. Its fleet today includes six VLOCs, two newcastlemax vessels and a capesize, largely serving long-haul iron ore and bauxite trades.
The fresh order gives a strong signal that Neu Seeschiffahrt is positioning early for the next round of large-bulk renewal, driven by tightening emissions rules and steady demand from long-distance ore flows.
For China Merchants, the deal is a milestone for its restructured Qingdao yard. Now operating under the new China Merchants Shipbuilding Industry banner, the yard is pushing into bigger bulker tonnage after years focused on capesize, panamax and containerships. It recently won orders for two firm 211,000-dwt Newcastlemaxes from Global Chartering — the DryLog/ArcelorMittal joint venture — with options for two more.
Landing Neu Seeschiffahrt’s six-ship series is also the yard’s first VLOC project since joining the China Merchants shipbuilding system earlier this year, boosting its visibility in a market where only a handful of shipyards compete for mega-bulk tonnage.
