ABS has issued Approval in Principle (AIP) to Hanwha Ocean Co. Ltd. for remote control functions on floating production, storage and offloading (FPSO) units.

ABS completed the review under its Requirements for Autonomous and Remote-Control Functions. The approval confirms that the design meets ABS technical standards for safety and performance.

The project forms part of the Offshore Technology Collaboration Agreement (OTCA) between ABS and Hanwha Ocean. The agreement supports joint development across three focus areas: sustainability, digitalization and artificial intelligence, and cybersecurity for operational technology.

Patrick Ryan, Senior Vice President and Chief Technology Officer at ABS, said remote-control systems improve offshore operations by enabling real-time data collection and advanced analytics. He added that these tools help improve safety, enhance compliance, and support better asset performance through automated control and faster decision-making.

James Shon, Chief Technical Officer at Hanwha Ocean, said the project improves offshore plant operations and worker safety. He confirmed the company will continue to develop advanced offshore solutions using artificial intelligence and digital technology.
